Head of Engineering

About the opportunity A venture-backed startup in the "built world" technology space is seeking a Head of Engineering to lead and scale our technical team. Founded by serial entrepreneurs with backgrounds from Coinbase and Meta AI, we are solving critical physical-world problems—such as housing shortages and infrastructure decay—by accelerating the pace of development. With an 8-figure pipeline and products already deployed with major North American asset managers, we are looking for a player-coach to own the technical direction of our backend, data, and AI systems. What you will do This is a high-impact, hands-on role (roughly 70% coding, 30% leadership). You will: - Work directly with the CTO to run engineering independently as the company scales. - Own technical architecture and build-vs-buy decisions for enterprise-grade AI and data systems. - Manage, coach, and provide direct feedback to every engineer on the team. - Ensure the team ships on time by turning high-level priorities into actionable plans while spotting risks early. - Set standards for code quality, security, and observability. - Engage directly with customers, spending time on-site to understand their needs and translating them into reusable technical systems. What you bring - 4 to 15 years of experience in software engineering with substantial recent hands-on ownership of production systems. - Proven experience leading engineering teams or large-scale projects with multiple contributors. - Deep expertise in backend systems, infrastructure, data, or applied AI. - The ability to thrive in uncertainty and make pragmatic trade-offs without sacrificing long-term stability. - Strong communication skills suitable for both technical internal reviews and high-stakes customer meetings. - A "founder" mindset; previous experience as a startup CTO or early-stage lead (Series A/B) is highly preferred.
